About Andrei Pricope
Andrei Pricope started the cello at age eight, following in the musical footsteps of his father, a noted Romanian conductor and musicologist.
Following his early training in the Central European and Russian string playing tradition at the "George Enescu" Music High School in Bucharest (where, as a student, he won national competitions), Andrei was offered a full scholarship at the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music (England), where he studied with Professors Hannah Roberts, Ulrich Heinen, and Ralph Kirshbaum. While a student in the UK, Andrei toured Spain and Italy, and attended Dartington and Lake District summer schools. As an orchestral player in Europe, he has performed under maestros Michael Gielen, Markus Stenz, among others, and with the Northern Sinfonia (UK).
As a teaching assistant to cellist Marc Johnson (Vermeer Quartet), Andrei earned his Master’s degree and Performer Certificate at Northern Illinois University (USA).
Andrei has appeared in master-classes with Janos Starker, Karine Georgian, and Raya Garbousova among other leading cello performers and pedagogues, both in Europe and the US. He was Principal Cello of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago under such renowned conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, Zubin Mehta, and Christoph Eschenbach, in addition to performing as guest principal cello for several regional orchestras in the US Midwest.
Andrei has lectured frequently at American String Teachers' Association (ASTA) National Conferences, has appeared in Strings magazine, and has been a beta software tester for Sibelius music notation software on iOS devices.
Having taught since 1992, Andrei maintains a cello studio in suburban Chicago. He also plays the violin, viola, and piano, and enjoys collecting old string method books, music publishing (Sibelius), foreign languages, B/W photography, traveling, and off-roading in the US Southwest, PNW, and the Rocky Mountains.
